Melancholia
While transient by nature, I find that unlike other emotions melancholy bleeds more readily into daily life. In my work I capture these small quiet moments of melancholy that are ever present, in light and shadow, on my face or on another's.
My melancholy is a silent home and a blinding light, the smell of rain and a crushing sense of numbness, of emptiness. But for others it is different. Like the tides of the ocean, it washes over us in waves, sometimes subtle and at other times inescapable. Seeping painfully into slow moments of waiting, it builds into a silent crescendo, only to once again secede its space to happiness and contentment.
Melancholy is a strong and ever-present force that can shape our perceptions of the world around us and completely overpower any moment. By capturing this emotional ebb and flow, I paint a portrait of the complex nature of melancholy as seen through my eyes.
